Clean & Dry a Rattan-Glass Serving Plate Safely

How do you clean and dry a rattan and glass serving plate without damaging the rattan?

A rattan-and-glass serving plate looks best when the glass stays streak-free and the rattan stays dry, firm, and odor-free. The safest approach is quick, gentle cleaning with minimal water exposure on the woven parts.

Step-by-step: Clean the glass and protect the rattan

1) Separate pieces if possible. If your plate design allows the glass insert to lift out, remove it first. Wash the glass with warm water and a small drop of mild dish soap, then rinse and dry immediately with a soft towel.

2) Dry-clean the rattan first. Before adding any moisture, brush crumbs and dust out of the weave with a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush. This prevents grit from turning into stains when dampened.

3) Spot-clean rattan with barely damp suds. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water. Dip a cloth in the solution, wring it out until it’s only slightly damp, and wipe the rattan in the direction of the weave. Avoid soaking seams, edges, and wrapped joints.

4) Wipe again with a clean damp cloth. Use a second cloth moistened with plain water (well-wrung) to remove soap residue. Residue can attract dirt and leave the rattan looking dull.

How to dry rattan correctly

Blot, then air-dry fast. Press a dry towel into the weave to pull out moisture. Set the plate in a well-ventilated area, ideally near a fan, and keep it out of direct sunlight or high heat that can warp or loosen the weave. Make sure the underside dries too by propping it slightly so air can circulate.

What to avoid

Skip soaking, dishwashers, and long rinses. Avoid bleach, harsh sprays, and abrasive pads that can fray rattan fibers. If something sticky spills, clean it promptly so it doesn’t harden inside the weave.

FAQ

Can you use food-safe oil to maintain rattan serving ware?

Use oil sparingly, if at all. A very light wipe of food-safe mineral oil can refresh dry-looking rattan, but too much oil can attract dust and become tacky; always test a small area first and wipe off any excess.
