Stick Rattan to Glass: Best Glue, Prep, and Clamping

How to stick rattan to glass?

To stick rattan to glass, use a clear, strong adhesive that bonds well to non-porous surfaces, prep both materials carefully, and clamp the rattan in place while it cures. Glass is slick and rattan is porous, so the bond depends more on surface prep and even pressure than on glue quantity.

Best method for a clean, durable bond

1) Choose the right adhesive

For most rattan-on-glass projects (like edging or wrapping), a clear two-part epoxy is the most reliable choice because it fills tiny gaps and grips glass well. A clear gel cyanoacrylate (super glue gel) works for quick tacks and small contact points, but it’s less forgiving if the fit isn’t perfect. Avoid water-based craft glues; they typically peel from glass.

2) Prep the glass

Wash the glass with dish soap and water, dry fully, then wipe the bonding area with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils. For extra hold, lightly scuff only the bonding strip with very fine sandpaper (e.g., 600–1000 grit) or a glass-etching pad, then wipe clean again. Keep the scuffing narrow so it stays hidden beneath the rattan.

3) Prep the rattan

Trim loose fibers and test-fit the rattan so it lies flat without springing away. If the rattan is very stiff, lightly mist it and let it relax for a few minutes, then dry the surface before gluing. Adhesive bonds best to dry rattan.

4) Glue and clamp without mess

Apply a thin, even layer of epoxy to the rattan (or a bead to the glass edge), press into place, and immediately secure with painter’s tape, rubber bands, or soft clamps. Wipe squeeze-out promptly with alcohol on a cloth (check your adhesive’s cleanup window). Let it cure undisturbed for the full recommended time before handling or washing.

FAQ

Can you seal rattan to make it more water-resistant?

Yes. After the adhesive has fully cured, a clear acrylic sealer or polyurethane can help reduce water absorption and make wipe-downs easier; apply thin coats and keep finish off the food-contact glass surface.
